Learn How to Count Calories - Step 3 - Knowing How Much to Cut From Your DIet

Let's continue to step 3 in how to count calories correctly. By now, you’d have determined how much calories your body needs daily to function and keep you going. Now, it’s time to make a choice on how much calories you need to cut.

The choice is totally up to you. However, I need to advice you that you may only shave off 250-500 calories from your daily calorie needs. So, if you have a daily calorie need of 2, 500, then you may only go down as far as 2, 000 calories a day. Under no circumstance are you allowed to cut down on more than 500 calories from your daily requirements. This will leave you weak, fatigued, and could make you susceptible to sickness.

For every 250 calories you cut down on, you will be reducing your weight by 0.5 lbs per week. So, if you cut back on 500 calories daily, you will lose 1 pound a week. Remember, that’s on dieting alone. You could lose more when you exercise. Simple walking for 30 minutes in a day will be enough to get you going.

Now that you know how many calories you should take in daily, it’s time to count calories from food labels! You can find these labelled as Nutrition Facts. They can be found in every packed, canned, or boxed product in the grocery store. Some grocery stores are kind enough to post calorie contents for items that are not packed, like fruits and vegetables.

There are two things you need to look at when you check out the Nutrition Facts. The first one is the serving size. This can refer to the average amount of product provided per serving. For example, 1 cup from a bag of sugar is equal to one serving. Another good example would be 1 piece of chocolate from a box of assorted chocolates is one serving.

The second and most important thing to check is the calories contained per serving. So for example, one chocolate from a bag of chocolates is one serving, and the box says each serving contains 100 calories. Let’s say you ate 3 pieces of chocolate. That’s equal to three servings, which is equal to 300 calories.

You will depend on these two numbers for you daily calorie counting. If you can’t find Nutritional Labels for some food like meat, fish, chicken, vegetables, and fruits, you can always research online and check how much is considered one serving for these foods and how many calories are contained per serving.

You can do these methods to plan out your meal so you can comply with your calorie restrictions. Make sure not to starve yourself. Stick to your calorie requirements and you should stay healthy while losing weight. This ends step 3 in learning how to count calories.

  1. Knowing how many calories are in each dish you eat is important, but not as important as understanding how many calories you consume per meal. Understanding your daily caloric intake is the only way to figure out where you can afford to eliminate calories in your diet.

To figure out which calories to cut, write down the calories in everything you eat including beverages and snacks.

In this way, you will know how much calories you need to cut in your diet..

  2. Cutting down your daily caloric intake by 500 is really helpful for losing weight. thanks @yo mama for the article. I learned something from it :D.

As you can observe when people buy in the grocery store, others tend to ignore the nutrition facts and any labels in the food product... and that's the common mistake people do right?...

Be sure not to cut excess calories in your daily caloric intake so that you won't be weak and be more prone to sickness

    :D

  3. yes, we should not cut too much calories so that we'll be able to maintain a good state of health...and also, cutting too much calorie can lead to binge-eating or eating too much food in a short period of time w/c could cause weight gain... so, NO TO CUTTING EXCESS CALORIE

  4. Guilty as charged! Mr. Gervacio I guess I'm one of them. I tend to disregard the nutrition facts of any food that I buy from any stores.

Piece of advice, if you want to cut down calories, do it slowly or step by step in such a way that the body would be able to adapt. Cutting calories in rush is not helpful because the body will find a way to compensate on the sudden changes.

  5. Thanks for the info yomama...

Sad to say, I cannot follow it. I'm underweight and it is definitely no underweight's goal to loose more of their precious weight. I am also guilty as charged in not looking at the nutrition facts because I don't want to be conscious in the food I'm eating... I don't want to restrict myself and I don't want to say no to the tempting call of food... I need the extra fats and calories... Not all of you may agree, but hey... It's just my opinion.

  7. Thanks for the article yo'mama. :D

@Ms. Traces: We're on the same boat ms. I also can't relate to this article 'cause my BMI's normal and I don't wanna cut nor add my calorie intake. But time may come that we'll experience this one, at least we'll know what we will do and we won't worry ourselves to death on how to manage this dilemma. haha :D

@Mr. Gervacio: i think almost all of us don't really care the Nutrition Facts when we do grocery. Specially when we're in a hurry :DD

  8. cutting off approximately 500 calories, so in example are Fried fish Broiled fish Steak Fried rice Noodles, dry or soup, Noodles, fried
-as mentioned by @ms.andales on the previous article. thanks for the added info!

this is going to be very hard, but eitherway
@YOMAMA, GREAT ARTICLE YOU HAVE HERE AGAIN. GREAT ADVICE IN KNOWING HOW MUCH CUT FROM THE DIET CANT WAIT TO APPLY IT. WAAA!

    ReplyDelete
  9. as what i have said in the previous comment, though it's really important, we can't expect for everybody to follow this advice. so, to make this easier, eat adequately, choose the RIGHT kind of food, and drink water everyday :))

  10. @ms traces: even if you are not interested in losing weight. i believe it is still helpful to count your calories since having knowledge of the amount of calories in a specific food might be an advantage for you. set for example, you just found out that your favorite, yummy, crispy, most sought after food has a pretty good amount of calories that you might need to gain weight. so isn't that good news? i guess that's one of the advantages you might get from counting your calorie intake if you have no intention of losing weight.

but we must remember that too much of anything has its drawbacks, whether it is calories, or a particular type of food. A well-balanced diet with creativity and variety is best suited to our needs.

thanks for the article yo'mama, i was kinda confused if i should take note on the number of fats or carbohydrates. i guess the number of calories will do. :)

  11. now, at this time of our age, counting calories is not that important. but as we grow older, it'll be that vital for us to regulate our calorie intake. so as early as now, we must start practicing regulating our calories so that it would not be hard for us to adjust when we get old :)

  13. This article is quite informative, well thanks to Yo'Mama for this interesting article it really is applicable for everybody especially to those who are on a diet. :)

@Ms Daguman, I think you're right about regulating our calories in take for it really could help us when we get old. As for me, balancing our calorie in take will help us maintain our homeostasis in our body which is also very important especially when we get older so that we can avoid any further diseases.

@Ms Traces, I guess you should also start to be aware of what you usually eat for we might not know it can bring harmful effects in our body and I know it will just take a couple of minutes in reading the nutritional fact well at least try making it a habit. :))

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes, who would care to look at the back label if you’re already trying to picture yourself eating the delicious and mouthwatering food being placed on the front cover with extra sign like 100% healthy? Hahaha, no one right? I think, maybe few of us does that, like reading, plainly reading, and then nothing, as if you didn’t learn that this luscious cravings are such distractions in your daily caloric intake. Majority of us tend to ignore, since we haven’t seen the result yet. @YO MAMA, another successful article, thanks for reminding us about the nutritional label at the back portion of the pack/box.
So, just like in the article, let’s try to practice this in a slowly manner for our body to respond properly rather than skipping meals and avoiding, we should learn the difference of cut from remove. 

    ReplyDelete
  15. I sometimes look at the nutritional facts whenever I'm in grocery. I feel good reading them because I think it will make me healthy and gain weight. I agree with Ms. Daguman that this can be a preparation when we get old to start having proper calorie intake.I believe sooner or later this article will be helpful so lets not say that it's not applicable to us because we aren't obese. I think guys we should always check for the nutritional facts because I believe there's a purpose why it is there. Like in Nido, it pays to check the label!

  16. Oooh, so this is step 3. Nice @Yo' Mama! :)
But I can't relate with it NOW. I don't have plans of cutting some calories on my diet, you know. I love to eat. I'm still young. Still enjoying the kingdom of FOOD. Haha. But I want to share these steps to my parents. Why? Because both of them are getting fat and they're getting old. I may sound mean but it's reality. They eat and eat whatever they want and never minding of their caloric intake. (Maybe that's the reason why I don't care about mine, now I know, I got it from them. HAHA) Going on, I'm worried about them. About what IT may cause them. So really, thank you for this @Yo' Mama. I'd print these steps and give it to them. :)
Though I can't apply these steps to myself as of now, I know, one day, I could.

@Mr. Sabay Yeah bro! You're right! We're on the same boat..... :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. as what Ms. Carcallas implied on the previous article, it is really not advisable for us to cut suddenly our calorie intake. it is just like quitting smoke. you need to go on a gradual process for a person to fully quit it. the same thing for limiting our calorie intake. you need to gradually lessen it, for you to not crave for it. it should not be totally cut for we need in our body's metabolism.

i think the bottom line here is still responsible eating. calorie intake should be proportional to your BMR.

    ReplyDelete
  18. We now know the advantages and disadvantages of calories in our body. We also know that too much calories is not good, so we need to remove the excess calories. A person needs discipline to do this. As what Ms. Tan said, it's a gradual process, it's like training your dog not to pee inside the house. You need to have self-control on your own body not to eat more. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. Like Ms. Traces, I am underweight and I would not cut down my calorie intake. This article may not be useful for me right now but it would be helpful for my parents since they are trying to lose weight. I have tried reading the nutrition facts of some foods because I was bored. I didn't really mind but now, I would try to take notice of the calories in the food I eat. Also, as Ms. Tan and Ms. Carcallas have said, the cutting down of your calorie intake should be a gradual process. As I said, this article may not be useful for me right now but it's very beneficial to have knowledge on things like this. Especially if you would want to lose weight in the future :D

    ReplyDelete
  20. I agree with you Ms. Taborada, I don't have any plans to cut down my calorie intake too! Though I'm not underweight, but all we need is calorie to increase our energy! And besides, I'm not on a diet. This one's not too helpful too. I always wnted to be fat. :) For others, this one is very helpful speacilly those who were EXTREMELY obese. Am I too harsh? lol.

    ReplyDelete
  21. we know that sufficient caloric intake is required for respiratory muscle activity (from our discussion..hehe) for those people who mentioned that they are not interested in losing weight it is still important that you watch for your caloric intake in order for your vital organs to function well.. ..
just like the others, i am also guilty in ignoring the nutritional facts and labels. if i buy a food, i won't care on how much calorie it take because these food gives satisfaction for my cravings, so i won't care about the nutritional facts. but after reading the article, i realized that those written at the back of the packages are useful.
@yomama, thank you for this article, though i'm not into losing weight, i still find it helpful to sustain life.

    ReplyDelete
  22. actually ms. cerna, this article not only gives us additional tips on ways of losing weight through the maintenance of calorie intake, it also adds information about the nutritional facts of foods we buy as mentioned in mr. sabay, ms. taborada, and ms. aparece's comments. sooo yeah, this article may still be of help to you. through reading labels found in the back of our purchases, we'll find detailed nutrition information, plus unique analysis tools that tell us more about how foods affect our health and make it easier to choose healthy foods. :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. i strongly disagree to those people like Ms. Taborada, Ms. Cerna, Ms. Traces on their idea about not minding their intake of calories. you know guys, i have searched the consequence of taking the said matter for granted. and i have found out that if you don't monitor your calorie intake, aside from the possibility of being obese, those people who have high calories in the body will likely to have a 50 Percent chance of having ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE.

i hope this information has convinced you to monitor your intake of calories even though your not fat.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Thanks Yo'mama for this article:)
I can totally relate to this.Like Mr. Sabay, whenever I go to the grocery, I just have the tendency to look at the back and check the nutritional facts, and I suddenly become conscious:))

Registered dietitian Jill Weisenberger tells her clients that calories are money. "You have a certain amount in your budget, and if you spend too much, you go into debt. If you take more than your calorie allowance, you get fat."

This is indeed true! It's either we earn more or save.Like Ms. Tan have said, it's a gradual process of controlling our calorie intake. We must never force ourselves to change to another eating pattern for it may shock us and makes us sick.

    ReplyDelete
  25. yes, guys. i can't say it's necessary that we check out every nutrition facts from food labels because only the health conscious give a care about those. :)) but to those who constantly check the nutrition facts, you shouldn't be easily fooled because in some cases, there are some discrepancies regarding the values in the labels.
sometimes, consumers like us tend to buy products with "all natural!" or "sugar free" but all of these are just to lure costumers like us to buy their products! so be careful guys and don't be fooled. it pays to check the ingredients at the back!

    ReplyDelete
  26. i agree with you ms rosales, there are some products that lets us believe that the nutritional contents are beneficial but the F.A.C.T. is that they just fooled their consumers so that more people will buy there products. checking the ingredients would be a big help if you know its effects to our body, but for those who are not knowledgeable about it do not care and let themselves be fooled. some ingredients maybe be good but some has side effects that can harm us.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Ms. Aparece: I think that's just how the market works, they sell their products with great conviction with additional promises to make our lives better, healthier and blah, blah, blah.

But in the need, they are they only one who are benefited while their customers are left worried with their jaw dropped.

    ReplyDelete
  28. thanks for the added info @Ms.Tan, see guys? too much cautious and awareness of your calorie intake is not that good to once health, it causes alzhiemer's.

so if you do the counting, in the end you'll forget all about it and be obese again HAHAHA :P

    ReplyDelete
  29. i don't think so miss rosales. there are food regulation and health organizations and departments that are in different countries. i think 'discrepancies' is not the right word. thats what I THINK. but i say it should be... (its actually taking me 5 minutes to find a word) hihihi anyway, the word i'm pertaining to is, (still looking for it) 'DIVERSIONS'. joke. lol. -not laughing. it's not actually the right word. -SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!!!. but what i'm actually saying is, they place things that are diverted by other things, they dont actually expose the bad side of their product. and instead of lying about it, they conceal it. and i think i'm right in saying such because they are being regulated and checked. so they wouldn't exist without proper inspection. why would a health and food regulation team allow a product to tell lies? just sayin. again, they don't actually lie and place wrong things or place 'discrepancies', but they conceal the truth :) or expose it but hide it in every way possible. that's business :) but i'm not sure, maybe they are, i'm a student nurse, not a businessman XD

  30. WHOW!!ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE?sooooo scary!! o.O I was surprised with what you've said there ms.tan though I really watch out with what I take into my body even if it doesn't affect much of my figure..(good thing i did, thanks to Yo'Mama :D )
@MS.CERNA: i know for now you take things for granted but think about when you grow old and your immune system becomes weak..At this point, the calories you took will already take effect because your body can no longer protect you fom its bad effects..I suggest you start being concious..not of your physique, but of your health..remember that the real trophy in life is not a good body but a GOOD HEALTH.. =]

Now that i know how to count my calorie intake...i will start being conscious of what i eat. Like mr. Gervacio said..according to the article, 500 calories being cut down from your daily intake of calories will help you lose 1 pound every week!...imagine the possibilities if i would really be faithful in following these tips in the past articles i've read.

But accroding to al lot of people's advices including my mom, she told me that if you want to diet...don't take it or start it immediately..and cutting you calories immediately..you need to take it slowly and surely..like i once saw in most movies..they want to lose weight that's why they act like anorexic people..some..immediately start dieting and they faint...leading to more complications like pneumonia, anemia..and etc..

soo..promise to you and myself this year..start losing weight and count your calorie intake..apply what you have learned. Anyone with me? :))

p.s.__this article is yet again..one of those eye opneners.. (>.<)

keep up the good work :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Cutting down the calories is not that quick and easy, the body may undergo some adjustments to that. And just like what MS.TAN said, it needs to go on a gradual process as she compare it with smoking.;) and another, it's really important to keep on monitoring the calories intake even if sometimes, we forget, we're lazy and don't mind it at all but always KEEP in mind that having the right count of calories intake have a good effect to your body aside from having this way just to lose weight AND also, do some exercise because it's what our body requires aside that it burns calories ---

  34. Alzheimer's?? (o.0) another scary disease..this will cause you to be a burden in your family..i know not even one of you would want that right? so watch out! :) (talking to self really..:)))

thanks for the scary additional info miss tan. another piece of knowledge:))

  35. mmHmmmmm hOw bout using CALCULATOR guyzzz or a sciSsor will dOOo...(*pfff) just jokin guyz uhm another WARNING from yO.mama DONT EVER BURN YOUR FATS LITERALLY!!!well as what we've jnown some people on a diet NEVER eats anything for the whole day and like what yO.mama said it's not the proper way of cutting down your calories..it will just make ones body weak and prone to many diseases coz the immunity shield will be penetrated sO never follow routine like that guyz...if your planning tO lose weight one must cut down her calorie intake or on the other hand burn it down by doing sympathetic activities involving different movements of your body...mOre than that dont use such method without knowing how nuch to cut coz you mught cut your calories too long and including sugar if you lose them out yOu will be dehydrated w/c will make yOu weak...use the anatOmy guyzzzz...WHERE SUGAR GOES..WATER FOLLOWS :}

  36. @Ms. Intong

jaw dropped?a bit exaggerated but somehow it is true to life.Because of their effective advertising technique we tend to be tempted which resulted to buying of that thing.

To simplify everything, we call it "ADVERTISING technique".
most advertisements are a bit exaggerated and sometimes way too much for the reason to attract more consumers and to recognize their products as well. Moreover, advertising techniques are utilize to persuade the public to buy.

Just like what you have said Ms. Intong, it is saddening to know that some consumers couldn't get the benefits which is rightfully theirs.(not really true to all products)

    ReplyDelete
  37. @K. Tan: Alzheimer's Disease!?!? woooww~~~ i should really start to check my calorie intake then -_-" But it's so tiring TT^TT hahaha~~ maybe I'll start checking when I'm around... 25 years old?? hahaha~~~

FOr now, just like F. Traces ... I need to gain weight. It's sad to know that I'm underweight :(. It makes me feel so weak (weak enough for the wind to blow me away..). So right now, I would rather enjoy the food being offered or given to me :D. Food after all gives us energy to be able to go through the stressful day :D

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Ms. Tan

Now, i'm convinced to watch my calorie intake.but somehow it is really tiring, same w/ Ms Li.
But then again it is worth trying rather than having that so called disease.

But what is the connection between Alzheimer's disease and your calorie intake?

    ReplyDelete
  39. @V. Salera: "ADVERTISING technique" hahaa~~ lots of people fall for it. One example is my mother. >_< when it says 100% all natural and stuffs that sound good to the health she buys them directly. -_-" :))) another good advertising technique would be using actors to endorse the product. Hmmm~~ Manny Pacquiao is an example. He endorses vitwater and alaxan.. and because he has a lot of fans.. lots of people would rather buy these products... (so out of topic.. but just wanted to share.. ><)

  40. To ms. Traces:
We’re on the same boat again together with ms. Rosales. but sad to say, i have to agree with ms. Suarez’s idea that knowing the amount of calories in a specific food might be advantageous for us. being informed of what we usually eat, might help us determine what is harmful and beneficial for our health.

For those who doesn’t care to check the back label, count me in (sad to say).i usually check it once in a blue moon (if i have the energy to do so hehehehe).

    To ms. Bispo:
I strongly agree with you. i’ve read that in an article (few years back in high school).it is indeed not good for our body because it needs to make some adjustments. if you do it hastily, there might be an alteration on your body’s function, thus leading to fainting (the most common), poor concentration and a lot more.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Willy Angelie Nuez! you're wrong about it girl!
Taking much AWARENESS of counting calories is not the cause of Alzheimer's disease. As what Ms. Tan said, it's the "TOO MUCH CALORIE", so one must monitor his intake to prevent such intolerable disorder. :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. right!!! most products usually get greater sales with the use of "adverting technique".It's all about who played smart and who've been fooled...

uhm... it got me thinking, all this articles of counting calories and stuff, I don't want to be the one "fooled". I'm not really into counting calories but I think for us not to be fooled we just have to be AWARE of the CALORIE CONTENT of the food we eat.

And about looking at the nutrition facts written at the back, can't it be manipulate or something? Just for it to a bit healthy? (completely just asking)

    ReplyDelete
  43. ms. li: haha. tiring isn't it? but though you're overweight and i'm not, we need to realize that checking the nutrition facts or shall we say the food content would be very beneficial to us. it make take us a long time to make this a habit but maybe a gradual check in our food intake will do. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. ms. enad: yeah! nutrition facts written at the back has the possiblity to be manipulated since it's just a matter of business and it is one way of catching the attention of most consumers. (disappointing but true) so, we should still be careful in a way that we are checking the calorie content in our food not by simply trusting into what's written in the nutrition facts but by being aware about its ingredients and if it is really healthy in our body. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Ms. Enad and Ms. Ocon: true that...i don't really want to be fooled by the false promises of those products with 'low calories' or something...there might be some hidden calories that they did not indicate in the nutrition facts. that's why we have to be very vigilant about the things we take in our body because if we won't, we will suffer a great lot. just like ms. ocon said, it's always just gonna be about business. hell yeah, if i was a saleswoman, maybe i would still do the same (hahahah!). i would package my product as 'calorie free' so that my customers would actually buy my product.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Ms. Laguda, if i'm your customer, I WON'T BUY your products (labeled with "CALORIE FREE"). HEHE
COz' girl, i'm aware that I NEED CALORIES! :)

Ms. Ocon, maybe you're right about nutrition labels being manipulated, but products must be checked and approved by certain departments before they're out in the market, like BUREAU OF FOOD AND DRUGS here in the PHILIPPINES. So it's the customer's responsibility to check the packs for certain "BFAD APPROVED".
    :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. @miss Arestang: I would like to correct you in your comment "where sugar goes, water follows.." my dear, its not sugar but SODIUM..at least that's what i remember :) no offense..

@ms. Selloria: thanks for agreeing with me :) what magazine are you referring to? pacesetter?

i agree with you miss Salera: The Bandwagon technique, and the "Scary Technique".. are one of the advertisement techniques used to manipulate most people...

in Bandwagon they show advertisements like: kinda "TM" or "talk and text" they show people that all people are already using it so why don't you? kinda makes you insecure..that's why you but it..to join in with the status quo

and in the scary technique(forgot the "real" name haha): they show that like the "Wilkins" advertiser or like the "pldt" advertisement that if you wont but the product you are endorsing,,there would be major consequences..line that kid in the Wilkins adver. that got a massive stomachache and got to the hospital just because of drinking tap water and not Wilkins..kinda scary right?

soo...these are just examples of the advertisement techniques..just sharing :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Knowing all of this it will help us readers to reflect and it is up to us what steps to take ..

Ms.Enad: you're definitely right..Dealers do that to have more sales even though making there consumers health at risk..

Ms.Salera: i believe you..there techniques can really hook up peoples mind..they tempt people for them to buy even it means of fooling there consumers.

for me,these are really helpful in many ways..But how can this be helpful if one cant apply it in his or her life.. so guys! let us try to apply these.just TRy.There is no harm in trying right?!But I'm not forcing everyone.. as what the article is about "The choice is totally up to you"..we just need to look in the brighter side..calories can help us lose weight.just by walking with your dog you can burn 207-302 cal/hour..joining aerobic class can burn 354-518 cal/hour.House cleaning can help you burn 207-302 cal/hour and so many more...we must remember that calories are inevitable in all foods..

yo'mama..you're articles are really great..it really impresses me as a reader and i guess as well as the other readers..keep it up..good job!

    ReplyDelete
  49. This reply is long over due, nut what the h*ck... You are right and thank you Ms. Suarez. Taking note of our calories would not only ensure decrease of weight but increase as well. But, unfortunately, I'm just too stubborn so... I'm still not counting my weight. :P...

Ms. Bispo: I agree with you. In a sense, not all advertisements are showing facts... They're not all true... AND... not all nutrition facts at the back of a food wrapper is true... not accurate... They're not that reliable.

Ms. Alpuerto: Yes Ms. Alpurto... There's no harm in trying... But not always. Sometimes, once can already make difference. For better or for worse would certainly depend...

    ReplyDelete
  50. @Ms.Padigos, sorry bout that. HAHAHA, goes to show im a bad reader. AND! having too much calories in here homie :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. @Vienniza Salera @Raye Bispo

I agree that creative writers may tend to make a mountain out of a molehill sometimes. But hey, that's their job. That's what they're there for. Adverts are made to persuade people.. to sell their products. So, what is the best way to sway people? To exaggerate, right? Why? Because reality is underrated. So our job is not to fall for it. If we are confident about who and what we are, we shouldn't be bothered with these adverts. Advertisers can't feed our insecurities if we are contented with ourselves, right?
