After Getting Infected, How Long Does The Flu Last?

After getting the flu, a major concern for infected people infected will be how long does the flu last and if ever there are any difference between adults and children. This is always a concern because there is nothing more important than eventually being free from the virus and its symptoms.

Before asking the question of how long the flu lasts, the very first thing that you should consider knowing would be what flu is. So, what is flu? The flu is caused by the influenza virus. This kind of virus is airborne which means that it can be acquired through having a close contact with a person who has the virus. Droplets which are infected by the virus will travel through air when the person with flu is going to cough or sneeze. Touching items which are infected by the person with the virus can get the person infected as well.

So, how does flu feel like? The symptoms of the flu are the same with the symptoms experienced in a common cold. However, the symptoms associated with the flu are more severe compared to the symptoms of the common cold. Now, the main difference that can be seen between the symptoms of the common cold and the flu will be the high temperature. The flu will also keep the infected person bedridden for a few days. Other symptoms that are associated with the flu are fatigue, sore throat, chills and shivering.

The best way that can be done before acquiring the condition is to prevent it from happening. Flu prevention is best achieved through proper hygiene. This way the chance of touching the contaminated items will be minimized. If you want, you can also get the flu shot so that you can have less chances of acquiring the condition.

If ever you already have the flu, you may ask the question of how long does the flu last? You should take immediate interventions so that the symptoms will be controlled. If you do this, you will be able to decrease the length of the occurrence of symptoms significantly. Over the counter medications will simply make you feel better and will not address the goal of decreasing the length of the occurrence of the symptoms.  Generally, when you feel like you have acquired the virus, all you need to do will be to take a rest and to drink lots of fluid. When you do this, you will significantly decrease the usual length of how long does the flu is going to last.

So, how long does the flu last? It can approximately last around 4 to 10 days. However, the length will usually depend on how you rest and recover from the infection. So, it is important that you are going to rest until you have fully recovered so that there will be less chances of worsening your symptoms and you can get back to your daily activities in just a matter of days.

  1. PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. yes oh yes. Flu has been one of the most common sickness being laid on us, it chooses no one. Even kids, teens, professionals or even doctors can have it. as I was reading the article (thanks to Yo'Mama for it) I have remembered about the last year's issue about AH1N1 virus, if Im not mistaken, Flu has been one of it's symptoms, ryt? Apparently, as I was reading and searching for other articles, I have found out that flu is just no ordinary sickness but also a killer. it contains pathogens that lowers your Immune system. it could last to a week. but just like the blogger said, drinking a lot of fluid could help and enough rest.

But for us, Nursing students, we all know that in order for us to avoid this type of illness we must, apply what we have learned in school, like the proper hand washing, self protect (never touch anything that might be contaminated=objects held by a sick person)and eat healthy foods. this way, we could avoid flu and this, try to share to anyone will it be your family, friends or schoolmates about how to lessen their chances of getting flu. :)

    --Be aware. :D

i'd also like to share a story relative to this article, thank you. sorry for the super long post. :P

  2. sorry for the long comment again guys. :0 can't help it. but don't worry it can help (hopefully). :))

  3. i think most of us know how it feels to catch the flu and it's not pretty. :))
totally agree with you ms. buencaloloy!woohoo:)) we NEED to practice proper hygiene to prevent being contaminated. What is washing hands for a couple of minutes compared to getting stuck in bed for days because you caught the flu? :D also, as future nurses (ahem) i think it is our responsibility to share our knowledge about proper handwashing to our family so that like what ms. buencaloloy said, it will help lessen their chances of getting the flu.:)para everybody happyyyy :D

  4. @ ms. andales, i was wondering where your long comment is. hahaha. i can only see ms. buencaloloy's and your short post. :D

  5. ohhhhwwww.. it's lost.. :( argh!! i have ton post again.. :((

  6. oh yes! we should know first what flu is before we do intervention so that it will be a lot easier for us to know the remedy. after getting affected by a certain flu, we asked ourselves "How Long Does The Flu Last?", @yo'mama answered it already. It can approximately last around 4 to 10 days. so long right?

But hey guys, do we really have to wait for the flu to be cured if in the first place we can prevent it somehow? No of course. Like what ms. buencaloloy said we must apply what we have learned in school.

aside from that, i did a little research and i hope this works for everybody to prevent the spread of flu viruses.

=Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

=Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

=Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.

=Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

=If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

=While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

    ENJOY!! :)

P.S: THANKS @YO'MAMA FOR ANOTHER JOB WELL DONE.. TWO THUMBS UP FOR YOU AGAIN. KEEP POSTING ARTICLES THAT WILL STUDENTS AND PEOPLE LEARNED ABOUT STAYING HEALTHY..

(THIS COMMENT IS SUPPOSE TO BE NEXT TO MS. BUENCALOLOY'S COMMENT BUT DUE TO CONNECTION FAILURE I TYPED IT AGAIN)

    sorry for the inconvenience. :(

  7. @Ms. Andales: very long comment. haha, though the things you've mentioned are already common knowledge, thank you for spelling it out to the rest of us. aside from having a severe family history of diseases (lol), i'm also very sickly. i could just recount the many times i've been hospitalized, what more experiencing those commonplace diseases like flu? take it from me, flu is one of the worst. aside from the blocked nose and dry cough, i had excruciating pains in my gut. i became nauseous, and i shivered and sweat at the same time. that's why after that incident (lasted for almost 2 weeks), my parents resolved to get flu shots for all of us. :))

oh yeah, i remembered that my doctor said something important. if i persisted with my usual activities (i had to practice for softball that time, and i was determined to go), there was a great chance that my flu would progress into PNEUMONIA. because flu weakens the immune system, bacteria is able to infiltrate our lungs and cause the former. so we should remember those steps cited by Ms. Andales, it could help us a great deal. cliché, but prevention will always be better than cure. ;)

  8. everytime i catch a flu, mom doesnt give me any medications instead she just give me a lotsa glasses of water to drink.

so yeah, it all starts with the basics to prevent flu just like what @Miss Buencaloloy said, (if only everyones a nursing student) haha and also include drinking LOTS of water okay?

    ReplyDelete
  9. I do really agree to @Ms. Buencaloloy that we need to have a proper hygiene in order to be free from diseases such as flu for it might not be just a simple disease but it can also threatens life and just like Ms Nuez, my mom usually encourage me to drink a lot of fluids.
As far as I am concerned, we should do proper hygiene daily or lets just say make it a habit in order to avoid from being infected by a flu for I know nowadays that Flu is HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS DISEASE just at to what the article said that flu is an airborne virus so you must avoid physical contact at all cost esp. to persons that already infected with that virus and that you must be fully aware of the things in your surrounding for you might not know that you are one of those spreading the virus.
SO ACT NOW BEFORE ITS TOO LATE through teaching or encouraging proper hygiene not only to your family members but to everyone.
Let's make a world a difference. ^_^ thanks by the way Yo'mama for such a wonderful article, it really helped me a lot. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. I notice that everyone is talking about the prevention of flu, so i will no longer point my attention on that specific subject. The article focuses mainly on what to expect when you, yourself have the flu (symptoms), which is also known as influenza. not only should you focus on the PREVENTION part, you should also prepare for the worst. I know prevention is important but we, as ordinary human beings, make a lot of slip-ups. That's why there are vaccinations. So i googled and found out that there's a 2011-2012 flu vaccine that protects us against an influenza A H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the 2009 H1N1 virus. yeheyyyy!

So a few tips when YOU DO GET the flu.. just like everyone above me said, drink lots of fluids, get lots of sleep and "take it easy" (oh yeaah), drink meds prescribed by your doctor to relieve fever and aches, wear layers (since you might get hot.. then cold from time to time), and of course wash your hands frequently to avoid cross-contamination.

@jansel buencaloloy: it was actually not a symptom, it was the flu itself. h1n1 flu virus. the symptoms are fever, cough, headache, and malaise (tired, no energy). some people also may develop a sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. just making it clear. :)

@r.c laguda: that experience sure is an eye-opener. it's a good thing you got through it.

so you heard that guys? flu can progress into pneumonia.. scary.

thanks yo'mama for the article. soon, you might get fed up with our "thank you"'s. :)

  11. I agree to all the people above. I was shocked a little bit about the duration of flu which is 4-10 days. Usually when I get a fever, it only last for 1-2 days. Maybe it's on how you treat yourself like drinking a lot of fluids to eliminate those hot stuffs (bacteria)and rest. It is true that proper hygiene is needed because we all know that bacteria comes in when the surroundings is dirty. When the AH1N1 visited Philippines, my family and I had ourselves vaccinated to prevent from acquiring it. I thank God for keeping me and my family away from flu last year until this year hopefully.

    ReplyDelete
  12. wow Andromedes Sabay, you must be really good in fighting your fever. haha. mine usually lasts very long. 5 days or even weeks (during bad days). i also remember when the ah1n1 flu virus visited the philippines, we stopped raising pigs. :P haha.

  14. Yeah, I'm a very good fighter when it comes to fevers. Lucky for me and i dont know for you. hahaha. Oh so where did you put your pigs during that time? Did you continue raising your pigs right now?

    ReplyDelete
  15. we sold all of them of course! hahaha. no, we don't raise pigs anymore. it's PREVENTION i tell you! say no to swine flu! :DDD

  16. Well you know Filipinos are very good in adapting things whether it is dangerous or not. Can't you see?

    ReplyDelete
  17. @sabay: yeah i know. but to adapt, we have to be exposed to it and know how it feels. i wouldn't want to risk my health. having that kind of attitude is really dangerous. and we can never be sure if the virus is completely eradicated. so the only thing we can do is be prepared and hope for the better. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree Ms. Suarez, sometimes you need to be a risk-taker. :)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I didn't experienced having flu before and I don't want to experience it either! Just imagine that it will take you 4-10 days and depends if you really have enough rest, drink lots of water, etc. When I have a fever it usually lasts for 2-4 days and I'm very weak, don't feel like eating, walking, and even moving :/ So I always sleep and sleep, drink lots of water and take the right medicine for it :D

I appreciate @ms.andales for the research she had made and giving us the information on how to prevent the spread of flu...

When AH1N1 spread here in the Philippines, My family and I were also scared to have the deadly flu. So we took precautionary measures for it but I didn't took that vaccination for it because I'm afraid of injections (yikess!!)

I'm the kind of person that is really concerned with hygiene because I'm really sweaty so when I get home, I take a bath... that's why I don't get sick easily. I think :D

But it's not just hygiene which repel us from flu, like the people above said... we should eat the right kind of foods to boost our immune system, drink lots of water, etc, etc!!!

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE PEOPLE!!!
I think we all know that!
    :}

  20. I agree to Ms.Teves, before when I was in my elementary and high school years I usually experienced FLU because of my carelessness and it sucks.I couldn't attend classes and I have to make up with my absences.I couldn't even concentrate with the lessons well.
Now I have learned my lesson very well that I have to do proper hygiene more carefully. How I wished that my body can resist flu.
The saying "PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE" is a fact. It's hard to find cure and be well when your sick.Well, this is my belief.:P

    ReplyDelete
  21. You'd be surprised how frequent handwashing can prevent flu and other diseases, decreasing the chances to a whopping 75%, maybe more.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death.
i usually experience cough, fever, and common colds before. other viral respiratory infections, such as the common cold, influenza (flu) infection can cause a more severe illness with a mortality rate of about 0.1% of people who are infected with the virus.
some of the possible complications of flu includes Pneumonia, Encephalitis (infection of the brain), Bronchitis, Sinus infections, Ear infections
i am glad that most of us know some precautionary measures to avoid this virus.
as a nursing student, i am glad our CIs taught us some asepsis like handwashing..
@yomama, thank you for the article..it help me to be a healthy individual...*smiles*

  23. :D
Miss Suares and mr. Sabay are talking about taking risks, well I define myself as old-fashion. I usually prefer just being home which means I don’t get to interact with a lot people that I don’t really know, except for those I meet in public places like the terminal, jeepney, ferry, etc. Then maybe that’s the reason why I haven’t experienced flu ( none that I know of) which is actually a first topic I can’t relate to. But it doesn’t mean I want to… because 4-10 days just laying in your bed and severe symptoms of colds isn’t my Ideal way to use my time. Besides I think if we have a strong immune system, we won’t acquire flu that easily. Like me… :D. Some ways I’ve learned while surfing the net that can strengthen our immune system is to be happy and laugh every once in a while, get enough rest, don’t stress yourself too much, have enough rest and exercise. It really pays-off if we have a healthy body. Don't you think? :D

    ReplyDelete
  24. I don't think I have experienced flu, none that which I know anyway. Usually when I get sick, I only lasts a day or two. My mom just usually lets me sleep and drink lots of water.

As the article has stated, flu is a contagious disease so we should always be careful. We never know, maybe the person beside us has the virus. But as most of the people said, prevention is better than cure. As Yo'Mama has said, frequent handwashing can decrease the chances of having flu and other diseases. So it all depends on your personal hygiene and your immune system.

@Ms. Enad: I know this is far from the topic but I don't get why you say you are old-fashioned. Are you referring to your preference of staying home??

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can relate with Ms. Enad and Mr. Gervacio. I haven't had flu before and I don't have any plans of getting it. I mean, 4-10 days of being bed-ridden and having a high temperature, chilling and etc. is definitely unimaginable. We'd have to miss a lot of things and events which would mean a lot of coping up to do.

I really thank you Yomama for providing us with such an insightful article. And I agree with everyone that "Prevention is Better than cure." "Prevention is also CHEAPER than cure..." Hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  26. @Ms. Taborada: You're right. We might not be aware of it but others might have the disease and we could contract it. I actually researched about the 10 most common places where one could get flu. Offices are the primary culprits, and in particular, the objects that have the most bacteria are:

    - Keyboards (People infected by the flu are likely to spread their disease laden moisture droplets all over their keyboards as they type away.)
    - Mouse (If the keyboard is covered in germs, so is your mouse.)
    - Telephones, which are handheld and could catch saliva when you talk.

we could also contract flu from schools, malls, public transportation, public restrooms, and more. wherever there is a crowd of people, expect a multitude of diseases that you could possibly contract. that's why handwashing never goes out of style.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Ms. Buencaloloy said, it's true that prevention is better than cure. It's not easy when you are sick. You have to take those colored capsules and flavored liquids just to get well and when it gets worse? sometimes you have to be admitted to hospitals. There's a time that I really wished I was sick so I can lose weight because as what I've observed from my cousins who got sick, they were really thin. Well, my mom thought it was ridiculous. So, everyone has to take care of your body because when you are sick, you can't go to school, and you have to do many things just to be excuse and it's very tiring. :(

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Ms. Enad: Actually, our homes are one of the most common places to get flu. Especially in the kitchen, where there's so much going on. And let's not forget our kitchen sponge which is one of the dirtiest items in our house.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree with Ms. Taborada and Ms. Laguda that we might be unaware that the things around us may already contain the influenza virus. Proper and constant hygiene is definitely important.

Ms. Minoza, you don't need to be sick to get thin. I agree with your mom that that is a ridiculous idea. You should be glad and thankful you are healthy, not the other way around.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @Ms. Minoza: Teehee, especially in our case as nursing students, we DEFINITELY cannot afford to get sick. a lecture day missed is a great loss. well, i actually enjoy taking in meds for flu. in my perspective, they actually taste great (ha!) but back to the point, imagine the money you could save from buying medication. your family could have great savings if no one ever got sick. and prevention doesn't cost a thing. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  31. @Yo' Mama: That's right. handwashing is one of the simplest things we could do, yet it has great benefits. it could save us from a lot of trouble, hassle and what not.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yeah right, i myself experienced this effin' flu and it's not pretty good at all. Maybe I acquire this virus 'cause I totally abuse my body by staying awake 'til dawn and do things like surfing the net and watching movies. And I admit that I'm a careless person. Tsk. Just like Ms. Taborada, I too usually drink lots of fluid. I stayed in bed for a few days and that ruined my synchronized schedule!

Yes yes yes.. flu could be contagious but there are many ways to prevent it. It is said in the article that this kind of virus is airborne so some of us who has poor immune system may easily acquire this. Maybe it would be best if we bring hankies wherever we go especially when we're in the city and all the pollutions out there. And frequent hand washing could also prevent in acquiring flu too.

Practicality check: it's more cheaper to do prevention than to seek cure. Getting this freakin' flu is way too expensive (in terms of medications). It could also be a pretty waste of money, time, and effort.

The saying "Prevention Is Better Than Cure" maybe a cliche but this could be a total reminder for us all.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I already had a flu and it really sucks!!It made me missed my class and was on my bed for the whole day, getting dizzy when I try to stand up.I don't think those capsules which are said to cure flu really does it 'coz trust me, they don't..
I also had a flu shot when I was young but still I often have flu..
@ Yo'Mama:How long does a flu shot last?please save me from those capsules and tablets.. I really really really don't like it.. yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  34. For everyone's attention, these are Other common symptoms of flu:
    Body aches
    Chills
    Dizziness
    Flushed face
    Headache
    Lack of energy
    Nausea and vomiting

    Now these are Possible complications:
    Pneumonia
    Encephalitis (infection of the brain)
    Bronchitis
    Sinus infections
    Ear infections

Now, Ms. Minoza, with these information in mind, would you still like to be sick just in order to be thin?

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Ms. Minoza: I agree with Ms. Traces and your mom that wanting to be sick so that you'll become thin is ridiculous. It's a blessing to be healthy :D

    ReplyDelete
  36. I can totally relate to the article. Like Ms. Concepcion and Ms. Laguda, I also have an experience on flu and it's not a no-brainer. It's really awful having fever, dry cough and runny nose all at the same time! Seriously, I don't want to experience it again. It lasted 5 days. It was like torture!

@Ms. Buencaloloy: Prevention is really better than cure. Thanks for bringing that up:) That's why I got the flu vaccine after I had a flu to keep away my doubts of the flu coming back.
@Ms. Laguda: Public places are indeed really public:)) Almost all bacteria causing diseases are all present there.
@Yo'mama: yeah right! We must always observe proper hygiene to prevent any forms of diseases:)

    ReplyDelete
  37. If i have a flu now, I think the question "how long this flu would last" won't be the first question that would come out in my mind. Of course I would be asking for what medications and interventions I have to take and do so that I'd get rid of the disease immediately (right?). Because I know, to be alive and kickin' is everybody's aim!

I'm accepting arguments, don't worry. (haha)

    ReplyDelete
  38. I hate having flu! as you see guys, I really get easily infected by these things >.< I was not able to comprehend what was discussed by my teacher because of that. I hate it most when there is a major upcoming event like SCHOOL TESTS... that's the time time they show up..gggrr!
To Ms. Andales, thank you for your suggested preventions. It would help a lot not only me but also to other people.

    ReplyDelete
  39. @ms. ganir, i dont thnk ur medicines should be disregarded snce they really can help n getting u better, i know too well how they suck snce im n that state ryt nw but they really can help.

i agree that prevention is better than cure but if u got that disease already, better cure it fast and properly to avoid further complications. ^^

  40. does anyone have any idea if it is possible to experience only some of the symptoms of flu and not all of them at the same time? just wanted to know ;)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I remember during 3rd yr, when there was an AH1N1 outbreak, most of my classmates had a fever for days. It was morning when they were pulled out to be examined and it was around afternoon when I had a fever....I was really really scared back then! I immediately took paracetamol and luckily me fever vanished.

    ReplyDelete
  42. WoOW! Ms. Miñoza, I found your idea peculiar. Haha. Why suffer to get sick just to have that thin body when you can do it while you're well? Don't you find it odd? Teehee.

    ReplyDelete
  43. ms. laguda: you're right! we should avoid ourselves from getting sick because as nursing students, just missing a day in our lecture weeks would really be a great loss! and besides, we as FUTURE nurses (hopefully!), must apply what we've learned in school by PROMOTING health and not by SPREADING disease. hehehe :))

thus, we must not take this issue for granted because this might lead us to further complications. we must take good care of our body and enjoy a DISEASE-FREE life. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  44. So I guess Mariel Marturillas and Eliseria Pantorilla are of the same idea as mine (even if they didn't mention it) hehe.
It's taking the great opportunity of being well again when the flu had just striked (i mean it's still young).

    ReplyDelete
  45. ms. miñoza: hahaha. do you really think that getting sick is one way of losing weight? haha. why not going into the bright side and follow the previous articles being discussed about losing weight? i think that's a better idea. hehe. i'm just suggesting. :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. i kinda agree with Ms. Minoza's feeling...there are times that i want to try getting flu...for i never even once had it. EVER..just out of curiosity...i just wanted to know the feeling of being admitted ina hospital and being cared of..and all...you know the feeling? .But Ms. Padigos has a point though...why not loss weight by being healthy at the same time.

It's not worth it to get sick and suffer just for the sake of losing weight...so not worth it..

@ Ms. Buencalolo'y comment: ha ha it's true..only if everyone could be nurses then will they know how to really take care of themselves and others.

you gotta take care of yourself.. especially when your a student..it sucks having to retake every exam that you missed on the day of your absence. Its kinda makes you feel like a LOSER..if your classmates are ahead of you and all..

@ Yo' Mama : thanks for another splendid article. Continue spreading the good news of how to be healthy..

    ReplyDelete
  47. miss rosales:

i think not. but i'm not really so sure. :) symptoms are different from signs too. with regards to symptoms, i dont really think that they should happen altogether for one to realize that he has a certain disease. plus, not all symptoms are generally evident, and one symptom might be a cause of another disease far from what you may think. also, some symptoms occur more frequently and longer than others. a symptom is any subjective evidence to a disease, so it depends if the patient or the person with a problem can experience it.

    - i'm not sure of this, this is just based on my opinion. i hope i gave you an idea. ANY ARGUMENT WILL REALLY BE WELCOMED :)))))))))))))))))))))) hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  48. haha..i just reread what Traces posted..and it kinda gave me a slap in the head...

Hell no! i don't want those complications..

so according to ms. Taborada..it's a blessing to be healthy...i now see the light...:))))

    ReplyDelete
  49. * i think not all symptoms should happen all at once :)

    (sorry)

    ReplyDelete
  50. :D I'm so HAPPY that your comments bout' this immune system thingy prove that this is so maybe strong in mine. I kinda realize it coz' i've not been in a flu YET! :)) (hopefully til' i die). YOU guys must now take Ms. Andales's and Ms. Laguda's preventive measures. And be FREE from SUFFERINGS. :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. absolutely ms. padigos! i think that Miss Minoza should not think like that.....wanting to have a flu to be thinner? what a thought!:D(no offense)...we should really think before we say something like that. coz you see, getting flu can lead to even worse things and not becoming thinner.....
    heheheheh....peace Miss Minoza...

    ReplyDelete
  52. i oppose to what ms. bispo posted about "feeling like a loser" thingy, because in the first place, its not really your fault that you got that flu. or if ever it's your fault coz you just touch something without having in mind that it might be infected ,still, it's not enough to feel like a loser...no offense ms.Bispo..

    ReplyDelete
  53. to Ms.Bispo: anyone doesnt need to ba a nurse just for them to learn about those things, maybe, its just what you call Common Sense, protecting yourself is a necessity, you don't need to be a nurse just to apply things like those, do you? :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. I never had a flu, just like F. Traces and J. Taborada, and I would like to keep it that way. I do not want to stay in bed for 4-10 days with nothing do. Especially in our case (nursing students), if we miss a day of school, we actually miss A LOT and to think we have to stay at home for 4-10 days, it would be very hard to cope up with what we have missed.

I agree with E. Andales. Handwashing is really important because it helps prevent flu infection. Before we do something like touching our face or eating, we must remember to wash our hands. We must never be too chill when it comes to flu. Most of us do not care about flu because we believe that we would not get it, but when we do, that is the time we start worrying about how to stop it. Prevention is always better than cure. So while we don't have the flu, we must do our best to make it stay that way. :D

  56. to Ms.Minoza: I guess that's too much :) it's not only you who'll gonna suffer remember? Your family, friends, and its not just gonna make you thin, its gonna put your life atrisk.

    ReplyDelete
  57. @Ms. Minoza: I think your perception on being sick just to be thin is greatly influenced by media. Some say it's because there are lots of very thin models and movie or TV stars. We see these people's bodies on TV, the Internet, or in a magazine and might feel that we want to look like that, too, because they seem are accepted by many.

Ms. Ocon is right why not look into the bright side? you'll be way better off just eating healthy and exercising, remember you can always throw in a snack once in a while, you don't have to cut out ALL sweets,, treat yourself. You can do it Girl!

  58. well,i found the article interesting because i've been there, done that. and in fact, i fainted once at our dormitory. i felt very weak and it was so hard for me to breathe.we went for a check up and found out that i had a flu. that was an alarming point for me. after that happened, i started to become more meticulous with my surroundings since i am not that very keen on the things around me.
thus, it is a proven fact that 'PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE' like what @ms.buencaloloy said above :)

  60. @J. Minoza: Yes, some people grow thinner when they get sick. But remember, this doesn't happen to everyone. And for you, it might be a great idea to lose weight that way, but it really isn't great. Why suffer just to lose weight, when you can always do some of the advices that we read in the past articles, right?? :) just saying though. >< don't get offended or anything~~ ^^

  61. @ Ms. Carcallas.. yup i got your point. thanks. It's true..i just didn't have another word of saying it.. But still i get you point..thanks for taking time to read my comment and correcting me..no offense taken..don't worry :)

@ Ms. Buencaloloy..yup i see your point too. but as you can see..its ironic really..calling it common sense when its not really common at all. My point is just that not all people can manifest the proper way of taking care of themselves and other members..that's just my point. But thanks for the comment though..i appreciate you taking time to read my comment :)

  62. @ miss Ocon...to help you get rid of your guilt when eating snacks..or sweets..

I read this book once..a medical book about natural way of losing weight..and you see, the author mentioned steps or reminders as you may call them...

this step caught me in particular:

FEEL FREE TO CHEAT ANYTIME...the author encourages you to eat whenever you want to satisfy your cravings..but just limit yourself..don't eat too much thought :D i hope my comment will mean something ti you somehow. :)

  63. MR. ARIZOBAL, NOVER: thanks for answering my question, haha. as much as you would want me to disagree with you, i'm not gonna argue with you because i think you're right with "also, some symptoms occur more frequently and longer than others." :D
i've searched that some symptoms like fever, aches and pains go away but new symptoms occur like sneezing and sore throat. and then the fever returns. so yeah, (i've answered my own question :)) )

  64. I had a flu before and for me it was a great excuse to be absent for the whole week. I felt tired and not in myself. I woke up and had no energy and had hives. My fever was climbing and I struggled to get it down. Very achy; tired; then hot, then back to cold; no appetite; could barely move out of bed; bit of a sore throat. When I got well, I was so thin. It was one of my painful experiences in life. So now, I drink lots of water and rest.

@Ms. Traces: Let Ms. Minoza take the shortcut!NYAHAH!! The possible complications you had posted are only for those people at highest risk include:
    People over age 50
Children between 6 months and 2 years
Women more than 3 months pregnant during the flu season
Anyone living in a long-term care facility
Anyone with chronic heart, lung, or kidney conditions, diabetes, or a weakened immune system

In most people who are healthy like Ms. Minoza the flu goes away like 7 to 10 days.

THANKS FOR THE ARTICLE AGAIN YO MAMA!!! YO GREAT!

    P.S. @ Ms. Minoza: It's your choice!!

  65. totally agree with everybody here...guess you've said it all! as to "PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE", it is as we say "an apple a day, keeps the doctor a way"?...

related experience: when the AH1N1 virus strucked our country,my sister who was then an ofw in the middle east was coming home and had a connecting flight in hongkong where we all knew that the first cases of the deadly virus was recorded. Right the next day, my sister had fever, sorethroat and muslepains...all were symptoms of the birdflu virus. Automatically, my parents isolated her in the room and force her to eat fruits and vegetables and to drink a lot of water aside from the medicines that she took. We closely monitored her condition and that if it will last for more than 3 days we will have her examined for the birdflu virus...Imagine our relief when she got better day by day...
Coincidence as it may, my sister and ONE of the first filipinos who were diagnosed to have been infected with the virus became friends and was able to share the traumatic experience he had fighting the deadly virus...
And now that we had the knowledge regarding flu and the precautions for its prevention, let us all prepare and spread this information now that as the effect of the climate change to the world and as we are experiencing late the cold season and the la lina, we can all defy ourselves so we can all be free from the disease together with our love ones...

  66. Miss Rosales: hahahaha i guessed you did so. so useless LOL. anyway, at least you searched for it which makes it easier for you to understand first-hand :)

  67. What the.....Flu??? I really thought it's just synonymous to colds!! I experienced a lot of colds and I directly subject it as a flu!
I guess if I wasn't able to realize that this blog exists(compliments to Mr.Kia Lim),perhaps I would rust in my false beliefs forever!

  68. @henelle enad: it's good to take risks but don't be too risky. you know what i mean? Sabay emphasized that its alright to take risks since your body might adapt to certain conditions. i think its good to take risks but you need to have extra precautionary measures. prevention won't hurt really. im surprised there are people who are thinking that getting sick won't hurt if they get to grow skinny. that's a verrrry sick idea.. we should make our own efforts. you're gonna eat a lot after you're better anyway. i got skinny after i had dengue then... wooops, im back. hahaha :DD don't forget that some conditions lead to even worse than you can imagine.

  69. well, Prevention is the best way to avoid having flu.. I am so conscious about people having symptoms related to flu.when i detect some of my friends or one of my family have symptoms related to colds or flu,i'll at least stay a little distance away from them and give a sort of advice to visit a doctor before everything gets worse. and i think, it is also better to take vitamins, most specially vitamin.C to boost our immune system and not get flu. right?:)

    ReplyDelete
  70. @willie angilie nuez: yeah, water can definitely help specially when you have a high fever. Fever causes you to lose a lot of fluid, so you need to replace what is lost by drinking more.:)

  71. @Raye Kathleen Bispo

ah ah.. be careful what you wish for :))
well, i am also one of the lucky few who haven't experienced flu yet. I only became familiar with it because of the advertisements they always play on tv. Now, because of this article and some of your comments, I am more aware of what flu really is, what it can do, and how long it can last.

But hey guys? Is this the same flu that Edward Cullen caught when he was still.. non-vampire?? LOL. just wondering.

  72. when i have a flu it takes 2 weeks to cure. my mom usually wonder why it takes weeks. she thought i experience stress, or i don't have time to sleep thats why i experience heavy flu i guessed thats what my mom says. hahahha :) but this article really means a lot.. but we cant avoid this thing because of the environment we have.. we need clean environment to maintain healthy body.. :)

yeah.. the best way to cure your flu is water :) so guys dont stop drink water ha. :)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ms. Tangub:

Over stress can be a possible symptom of flu.
Cough and fever can also be a symptom.
I have here some common symptom to a person infected with a flu.

    -Fatigue
    -Muscle aches
    -Sore Throat
    -Headache
    -Decreased appetite
    -Runny nose
    ----Sometimes:
    -Nausea
    -Vomiting
    -Diarrhea

Good thing your flu only lasted for 2 weeks. However you might be at higher risk for more severe complications if it was not cured.
Such as the Reye's syndrome which affects the central nervous system and the liver, and can be fatal.

Yes, it is true that flu and other disease can't be avoidable that is why we have to take some necessary precautions. Ms Andales stated a lot of preventive measures such as handwashing, covering of nose and mouth when you sneeze and cough and so on and so forth.

Absolutely there is a need to clean our environment!
Because clean environment equals free from disease. :D

  74. As human population continue to explode it is by far irrelevant to say "Prevention is better then cure". The cliche' is only applicable if one knows what to prevent, when to do it and the frequency of occurrence. Unless if you are going to avoid everyone then you have a better chance of not acquiring any disease that can be transmitted through airborne, droplets, fomites and the like. For me, the best way to do is to keep yourself healthy, in that way whatever infection you might face then you have a greater chance of fighting against it. The new saying would be, " Preparedness is next to wellness".

sO yO.MamA's firing up this comment box again and this will be my first time boilin' up my words in it >....<

uhmmm yes its very true that we should always prevent flu from attacking our immune system and lots of ways are mentioned by my classmates up there w/c is very helpful for our health. although most people consider this simply an annoyance and such a bother we should always keep in mind that it is not just a mere dust that we could just flick away because as we all know it will cause a devastating phenomenon where it can bring a whole nation down its knees, can you imagine our country or the whole world will suffer a deadly flu virus again just like before???? so that's why we should always prevent this type of plague from crushing our future and always..always use preventive measures... To add uP moRe facts aboUt our topic, i read a book written by Neustaedter and it has loAds of stuffs about FLU; so I'll share sOme of it guYz >>>>>>>>>>>>

DiD yOu kNow thaT FLU actually originates from Italy w/c is "INFLUENZA" and is first used in 1504 that actually refers to any disease epidemic. it began in Italy and spread throughout Europe; since then it is shortened to flu(serious infectious disease characterized by muscle and joint achin, prostration and respiritory congestion with fever and headache). alson it was not until 1931 that an influenza virus was identified in PIGS actually and later in 1933 a human influenza virus was discovered by british researchers...sO that ends up here tHanks lOts y0.MamA!!!

  76. this same thing goes with me.. Actually, that's what my mother suggest me also when i catch flu. she said that water therapy is the best medicine to flu. i think my mom and yours have the same mentality and belief. i'd love them to meet someday, maybe they'll make a good team :)

  77. hmmm..wow..the flu??..i dont think i ever had the flu..i think..? :)) ..reading this article now makes me more careful about my environment...and myself of course..i dont think i can handle having the flu..i mean being in bed for 4-10 days???! that's outragious..! ( at the same time BOORIIING.. ) so...lessons learned..1. ALWAYS BE MINDFUL ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT..we may never know what's out there that's ready to get us.to infect us.! 2. EAT FOODS THAT BOOSTS YOU'RE IMMUNE SYSTEM ..for lesser chances of getting sick and contaminated :)) 3. the most important lesson is to ALWAYS STAY HEALTHY AND BE HAPPY..! :)))))) a happy and a healthy lifestyle lets you deal withstress more therefore reducing the chances of getting sick.. :))))

hehe..sorry for the loooooong comment..! :)) these kinda just popped up in my head.. :)))))))))

  78. After reading this article , i now know more about what it feels , what to do and on how to prevent myself from getting infected from the Flu Virus. but basing on my own experience of having flu is that every time i have it, my body always seems to be weak and not a hundred percent, i find the normal things i easily do, hard. And that life seems a burden when your kind of in this state. so as much as possible i recomend that everyone should always take care of their health in order to avoid having a flu and other diseases.

  79. @Ms.Daguman, you spelled my name wrong. But yea, water helps.

Just like what @Ms.Niala said, WHAT THE F-luuu :)

    ReplyDelete
  80. Ms.Hermoso, my friend! you're really right that the environment affects people state of health. Flu is the main concern in this article. Most people catch flu when they breathe in droplets from people who has flu. it is also spread when you touch on something that has virus on it causing this. That is why I really agree on you that taking in vitamins or foods that can boost your immune system is a good prevention. Vaccines are even available for protection against swine flu. Simply not sharing your utensils, food ,cups and bottles are good prevention . Carrying hand sanitizer with you and covering your cough with a tissue then throwing it away after use are simple things that can definitely help you avoid spread or catch flu.
