Learn How to Count Calories - Step 1 - Do We Need Calories?

So you want to learn how to count calories? The general principle with dieting for weight loss is to eat lesser calories than your body burns on a daily basis. Weight loss using effective dieting is basically a game with numbers.  You need to eat lesser calories than the actual amount your body will burn as it functions throughout the day.

Before jumping in to counting calories, let’s cover the fundamentals first and help you know what you are dealing with.

By now, you probably think that calories are the villains that are making your life miserable. Well, at one point, you’re right. However, calories are not all that bad. In fact, they’re keeping you alive and breathing as you’re reading through this article right now. Let’s get to know calories a little bit.

Let’s pretend were in a 4th grade classroom and our teacher asks us a few health questions.

Teacher: “What makes our bodies move?”
Pupils: “Our muscles!”
Teacher: “Very good! What makes our muscles move?”
Pupils: “Ummm... cells?”
Teacher: “Well, to be specific, it’s your nerve cells and muscle cells. Now, what makes a small microscopic cell move your entire body?”
Pupils: “...”

Well, probably our boy-genius classmate could have answered that when we were on 4th grade. But for our whole class’ benefit, the answer to the last question is CALORIES.

We do a lot of things daily. Can you list some of your daily activities? I bet they include walking, running, cooking, washing, bathing, driving, typing, talking, laughing, and all other things that make life dynamic. Your cells help you do these things, and they expend calories so you can do them. Calories act as your body’s energy source, same way as a car runs on gasoline. By now, you’ve probably realized the thousands of things we do daily, and the thousands of calories we need to maintain those activities.

If you still have a bad impression of calories, then please read on. You’ve probably thought about the thousands of things you do that spends calories. By now, you’re probably thinking about walking more each day to burn more of those villains. If you think that way, then swell! At least were starting to get a move on with your lifestyle changes. However, have you ever thought of the involuntary stuff your body does to keep you alive? Breathing, pumping blood, digesting food, thinking, and feeling all expend calories. So as you can see, you don’t only need calories to move, you need it to live.

Now that you are enlightened with the use of calories within our bodies, I am sure you won’t go off and do extreme dieting that could shrivel up your bodies and cause more health problems. Remember, WE NEED CALORIES. It’s just a matter of counting them so we know how much we need, and how much we can lose. Proceed to Step 2 to learn how to count calories better.

  1. Thanks Yo Mama for this very informative article.. Now I know that calories is very important specifically in keeping us alive and do the things we want. See guys? It serves as an energy for us and imagine ourselves having less calories, we would look like hopeless and ugly. I say "WE NEED CALORIES" and its just a matter of how you use them. Live life to the fullest and healthiest!

  2. Since i'm sick and bored, stuck in my house, let me just reflect on these article. the things that the article is trying to imply to us are all correct. we need calories because it is mainly our source of energy to perform basic and complex life functions. as i was reading the article, i realized that maybe the cause of my sickness is because of the irresponsible intake of food which includes calories. i am not limiting myself though but it gives me this idea that maybe i lack the calorie intake for my body to not function properly. i have learned my lesson now and i am with Mr. Sabay's campaign "TO TAKE IN CALORIES RESPONSIBLY!"

  3. @MS. Tan, get well soon.. I'm glad we're in the same sailing boat hahaha.

  4. you sound pathetic mr.sabay..Of course we knew that already!! hahahaha!!
Anyway @ Yo'Mama, what foods has less calories or can you give us a list of foods that we can take as a substitute for those which has greater amount of calories? I appreciate this article but I would wanna go directly to your point which to learn how to count calories.. I would really be looking forward to it.. Thanks and Have a good day! ^^

  5. yes mr. sabay.. calories are important in our body. Calories are a measure of how much potential energy food contains.

Eating too many calories is unhealthy because when you cannot use all the energy stored in the food you eat, it is eventually stored as fat.

However, eating fewer calories than your your body needs to function effectively, is just as damaging, if not more so. This can lead to a variety of diseases and conditions from poor skin to debilitating bone disease. :)

  6. I'm on your side Mr. Sabay,Calories are very important to our body and we don't need to remove these from our system. It is just a matter of moderation and balancing.
I know not everyone can control their appetite to eat foods that contain so much calories but we must need to burn the excess in order to balance the energy that our body needs.

  7. Thank you for this very nice article Yo Mama! :) I always knew that calories are the fuel of our body. We need this to keep us move and stay alive. There are a lot of foods that contains calories. So, to keep our bodies moving and keep us alive, let's eat a lot a food that contains calories. HAHAHA. But I have a question, do calories also make a person fat? :)

  8. Wonderful article, yet again, yomama... Heheheh

I am with you Mr. Sabay when you said that calories are very important. Get well soon Ms. Tan and eat more calories for faster healing... Hehehehe. Ms. Cerna, calories don't make you fat. You see, calorie is the measurement of energy. Your body uses an average of 1200 cal of energy a day. If you take in more calories than your body uses you gain weight because like carbohydrates that energy is stored in the fat form. So basically, calorie and even carbohydrate don't make anyone fat, it's the lack of activity or exercise.

    ReplyDelete
  9. yes, we have already known that calories are needed in our bodies in order for us to walk, talk, digest, and everything else that requires energy. this article rubs it in our faces that if we diet irresponsibly and skip meals just to avoid calories, then we face the consequences. we need calories to basically, live.
i totally agree with ms. tan that we have to take in calories responsibly because too much of everything might be just too much. :D and if we just cant resist food super rich in calories, we have to exercise! as what ms. traces said, it's the lack of activity or exercise that makes one fat. :)

    ReplyDelete
  10. OHYeah! Calories is one of all those that our body needs. Without it we don't have energy. If your on a diet, well, counting your calorie intake may help, right? :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. yes ms. minoza! counting your calories will be a big help :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Ms. Traces: that's right ms.traces..lack of exercise or activity really makes a person fat...and that only means that we should really do something in order to get rid of those fats, it may be just a simple walk/ stroll or exercise.. and do other things that can burn those extra calories in the body in order to be healthy...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Yup Ms. Minoza and Ms. Rosales, counting your calories would help a lot. But the problem with that is that only some could actually do that. I for example would not count my calories when I'm eating... When you are enjoying something, you wouldn't be thinking of anything else... Anyway, that's just my opinion... Hehehe

    ReplyDelete
  14. it's obviously because you are not trying to lose weight ms. traces. those who are weight conscious carry with them the burden of counting the calories of everything (maybe not everything) they eat. :))

    ReplyDelete
  15. "CALORIES (noun)- tiny creatures that live in your closet and sew your clothes a little bit tighter every night" -- It's hilarious HAHAHAHA :D

It simply tells us that CALORIES are very important in our body. We need it for doing activities we do in our daily living... SIMPLE AS THAT! It's also not good to take less nor take more calories. I think we all know that.

I'm also with the "TO TAKE IN CALORIES RESPONSIBLY!" campaign!!

so thank you @yo mama for the article
    :}

    ReplyDelete
  16. Come on Ms. Rosales... I don't think YOU count your calories... Do you?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Calories is essential for our body to survive. Too much or too less presence of it has a consequence with regards to our health.

Ms. Traces I somehow understand you! Like you, SOMETIMES no matter how hard I try to count my calorie intake...I still can't do it especially when I'm to focused or enjoying what I'm eating. :))) I guess its only matter of self-discipline.

    ReplyDelete
  18. of course i don't :)) that's why i said only the people who don't want to gain weight or those who want to lose weight count their calorie intake :D

    ReplyDelete
  19. hmm.. The energy stored in food is measured in terms of calories. Amazingly, given enough calories, the human body is capable of manufacturing the majority of the thousands of the chemical nutrients that it needs to sustain life.. i better watch out for my calorie intake. i agree with ms. marturillas and ms. traces that enjoying what you eat makes you forget of counting your calorie intake.

    ReplyDelete
  20. thanks for the article yo'mama! :D

Hey, I'm on the "TO TAKE IN CALORIES RESPONSIBLY" boat too! haha :D

But honestly, i don't take calories responsibly (but i'm going to change now). I eat everything what I want to my heart's content and nothing changes in me physically. I don't gain nor lose weight. Then by reading this article, I realized that in no time soon, if i'm going to abuse myself more, i'm going to pay for the consequences and i assume that would be no good for me.

So I'm gonna live life healthier and longer!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks Yo'mama for this interesting article.

I believe in you we need calories! We must just consume enough, in short, we must control our calorie intake.
Seriously in my day to day basis, I don't really burn enough calories coz I'm always sitting and walking just a little. I do stretching in about 5-7 mins. only, and it doesn't even make me sweat..haha

life without calories is a total weakness...

I hope I can learn to be more active to burn excess calories..:)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, A. Sabay, calories are very important to help us function throughout the day. This article is related to the article that we all have read about before. Calories are not the bad guys. They actually help us LIVE.

I agree with F. Traces. Calories don't actually make us fat. But because of the lack of activity or exercise we do, they are stored as fats in our body. And yes, counting the calorie intake is not an easy thing to do especially when you enjoy eating. Like I said before, "I have been there and I have do that. It did NOT work out." ahahaha~ keeping track of how much calories you eat is just so much of a hassle. And honestly, I do not need to since I'm unfortunately underweight.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with Ms. Concepcion and Mr. Sabay. It really depends on us on how to balance and to take them responsibly, as what Ms. Tan has stated.

@Ms. Cerna: yes! calories can also make us fat.
Although calories are necessary for providing energy for the body, if you do not engage in physical activity to burn more calories than you take in, the energy is stored in the body as fat. This excess fat is not healthy because it causes weight gain and fatigue, limits mobility, contributes to aches and pains in the body and it can make it harder to breathe and sleep. Too much weight gain can lead to obesity.

  24. @Ms. Intong: i can totally relate with you.. I just sit the whole specially when we have long hours of classes. And i just walk a little too. (when i'm on my way home). :D i don't think that's enough to burn all the calories that i ate for that day. :D

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hmm, I agree with you @Ms. Traces. I don't count the calories of the food I eat too. Hahaha. I guess the article speaks for itself. Calories are important to US. Obviously. Hehe. I am with the same boat as with @Mr. Sabay and @Ms. Tan. Going back with the opinion of @Ms. Traces. I am totally with you. Counting the calories of foods are helpful maybe for some, but not for me. I see it as a very tiring routine. Count then eat, count then eat, count then eat, count then eat. Nahhhhhhh, hassle. :|
But again, it is important for some. Especially those who are on a diet. Be diligent and count calories. It's a great help even if it's tiring. Hehe. Can't wait to see the other steps of counting calories @Yo' Mama because maybe I'd change my mind and maybe I'll find myself counting my calories soon. Just maybe. Haha.

And another thing, I was struck by the "TO TAKE IN CALORIES RESPONSIBLY!" Campaign! It is absolutely true. @Ms. Traces, we may not be counting our calories but, now I realized that we really should take it responsibly. Right? After all, it's all for our own good. :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. its such a hassle to count how many calories you take in when you eat...honestly i know...my brother is such big baby..he keeps asking me " does this piece of bread have many calories or like...how many calories is this?" seriously it gives me headaches...i don't even count my calorie intake and i'm a girl!

really.. but i agree with mr. sabay.. calorie is indeed very important in our body...

Ms. Ganir...don't be so harsh to my sabay..:) dont mean to offend you:)

    thank you again yo mama:)

i'm pro "TO TAKE IN CALORIES RESPONSIBLY!" campaign..:)) GO! GO!

    ReplyDelete
  27. OH YES, WE ALL DO NEED CALORIES. now is the time to correct the people who are on a diet, avoiding almost all the food in the world cause they think that these arent necessary to one's body.

but TOO MUCH calories is not good. it would lead to obesity and further illnesses, wow dint realized that before haha. now i get it.

    WEE SMILE!

    ReplyDelete
  28. oh yes, Ms. Nuez! that is why reading the Nutrition Label of everything you eat is important. this is to regulate your calorie intake everyday. and I believe that it should be proportional with the how much calories you burn too. ;))

    #lovelots :*

    ReplyDelete
  29. Just like @Ms.Remeticado, I find calorie counting a waste of time. I’m a student, and not that I’m lazy to count; I just have tons of things to do that is more important.

I don’t go to sleep unless I feel that my body is already tired. I’m not sure about this, but being tired is my way of knowing if I’ve successfully burned the excess calories that particular day. My roommate comes home late at night, so I have the whole room all to my selfish self to do exercise without looking awkward (this is real-talk promise). Hahahaha So I exercise until I feel that my body is tired enough. I don’t want to be too tired either because it will give me muscle pains in the morning. Because of this routine, I’m always ready to take whatever delicious food everyday without worrying about getting fat.

Exercise requires much more of my time than calorie counting, I know. But I simply chose exercise over calorie counting because calorie counting before having a meal isn’t fun and it will deprive me from eating what I want. Exercise works effectively on me, and I won’t have to control the amount of food I eat.

  30. Calories benifits in the body. I've learned and read that before from the past articles.
I guess, the above article's main point is for us to see the importance of being mindful of the kind and amount of food that we take into our system. TRUE!! Too much and To little of something would cause a great effect in our body..so, we must always maitain BALANCE in everything!

Ms.Cerna, quite ironic though you were still asking if calories could make you fat when Ms. andales has already answered that question from her post prior to yours. Haha :)) Well, maybe you have overlooked that one? If so, Ms.traces has another opinion for you, which I think is very understandable. Lazziness is also one thing that could cause calories to turn into fats that's why..next time, don't be too lazy, keep reading comprehensively! ;)

  31. Metabolism in our body is greatly influence by calories...
By the way I would like to thank Yo'Mama for this amazing article which add up to my learning about calories and its really worth sharing for everybody.

I totally agree to Mr. Sabay and Ms Conception that we need to be responsible in moderating and balancing our calories in take everyday and also to Ms. Marturillas even though you don't count your calories but at least try to regulate them :))

    ReplyDelete
  32. Calories aren't bad for you. CALORIES are needed by our body to perform vital functions. your body gets energy from the calories you consume (we have learned that before from the past articles, right?). but when taking in calories, we should be always mindful of the amount .consume only what is essential to your body because as what ms. Traces have said, eating too many calories — and not burning enough of them off through activity — can lead to weight gain.

So i guess, the main purpose of this article is for us to be heedful about our calorie intake because too much or too low existence of calories can lead to irreversible damage.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Okay, I guess calories aren't bad at all. I thought It can you only make you fat and lose your self esteem. Thanks again dude for sharing this information to us. Now I know that calories are needed in my body.

    NO picture of awesomeness!!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. yes!! that's right!! we want to burn calories because we thought it was the source that's why we are fat and all... but the truth was it was the one who gives energy in our body.. to move our body, muscles, gosh!! i cant believe this.. hahahha :) thats why guyz out there.. look at this article now you know that we also need calories in our body.. so dont blame the calories why we are fat... so now your still young it foods that contains calories but not that much ok.. so believe me... when your coming to school eating some calories then you'll feel energize and all.. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Ms. Tangub: pretty much...we all have misconceptions about calories. maybe because it's always advertised as something that we should avoid. one way or another, products are always marketed as 'calorie-free' or even 'zero-calorie' (is that even true??? hmmm...). you know, we shouldn't blame calories as the 'fattening' culprit, rather, we should look into our respective diet and eating habits before we second-guess. right? just imagine if we didn't have any calories, you would actually DIE right now (yes. that's true) coz it sustains vital body functions that are INVOLUNTARY such as breathing, heart movement, digestion, brain activity...name it, you wouldn't be able to achieve almost ANYTHING without those 'villains' we call calories. :))

one way or another, it always boils down to discipline. eat right. eat healthy. or else...>:P

    ReplyDelete
  36. seems like most of us are into same state of mind when it comes to this article. i'm of that because it means that we have are united to partake the act of proper food intake.

@Ms. Roferos: i'm glad that you have already come to your senses. it is really important to take consideration on your calorie intake even though it still doesn't affect you. it is really better to be ready than to regret in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @traces and rosales: you guys are absolutely right. .

there is no point in counting your calories if you do not exercise. i believe the very purpose of counting calorie intake is so that you'll be able to compensate through exercise. just as the article said, the rule of dieting is to burn more, and consume less. :)

@julson amil: you actually thought that? i assumed everyone was fully aware that calories not only make us fat, but they have their own ways of helping our bodies too.

    ReplyDelete
  38. it is epecially hard to burn calories if all you do is sit in a classroom everyday and eat. but as we all know, our calories serve as our energy. i don't think people will immediately die if they run out of calories ms laguda, it's a step by step process. hahaha. your body will start to burn muscle instead of fat, and will go into "starvation mode" meaning it will store EVERYTHING you eat as fat, even when you stop starving yourself! You will feel weak, bad tempered, you will get acne on your face and back, your hair will fall out on your head and then you will grow hair on your chest, face, and stomach. your breath will stink, and you will look and feel like hell. eventually, as starvation weakens your organs, and you need food to live, you will die!!!! haha. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. CALORIES. CALORIES. LOSE WEIGHT. LOSE WEIGHT.

hohoho oh gosh, as much as some of you guys are having a lot of trouble losing weight, i'm having trouble gaining it. hmph. thing is, it's great you're reading articles like these. and it doesn't only show great use to you guys, but for us too, IF we get bigger. anyway, losing weight or not, calories are really essential. i think we all get that by now. but hey, does anyone of you know how exactly we can count our calories and how we lose them (IF THERE WAS A WAY). but again, these are not the culprits right? hihihi CUT BACK ON THOSE EATING AND FIND A TREADMILL! FAST! :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. hey guys! i got this info for all of you! :)

here are the top 10 foods highest in calories:

#2: Vegetable Oils (Soybean, Peanut, Palm, Olive)*Limit
#3: Nuts and Seeds (Macadamia and Sesame)*Recommended
    #4: Salad Dressings *Avoid
    #5: Peanut Butter *Recommended

    #7: Dark Chocolate *Recommended
    #8: Cheese *Limit
    #9: Fried Foods *Avoid
#10: Processed Meats (Sausage and Pâté) *Limit

okay. some of it are our favorites and what we crave the most right? but let us be reminded always about these foods okay? :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. @jam daguman: oh my gosh!! fish oil?!?! noooo!

the 1st time i found out that dark chocolate is actually good for us, i literally jumped for joy. :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. thanks for posting that list Ms. Daguman. I need those!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks Ms. Daguman! Really appreciated your effort.

    @ Mr. Gervacio: Great humor… :D

Ms. Laguda has aslo a point, that the media have all given us misconceptions about calories. And this gave me the ignorance before that calories is really bad for us but starting when I broaden my knowledge about the human anatomy and physiology. I have realized the importance and roles of calories in our body. But for us to lose weight as the article stated “we should burn more calories than what we actually eat”.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @Mr. Arizobal: we have the same senti's. aw, instead of losing some weight, wanna do the other way around.. TO GAIN SOME. :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. calories isn't the one to be blamed on, it's you. :) learn to control. DISCIPLINE :) im trying that now, why not try it?

    ReplyDelete
  46. @ms. suarez: yes FISH OIL has HIGH calories. so avoid eating too much tuna, okay? :) hahaha

welcome guys! it's my pleasure :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. WOW! thanks for the additional info ms. daguman! like ms. suarez, i myself too was surprised after finding out that dark chocolate is actually good for us since it was my all-time favorite. hehe. but although this would help us gain much calories, we must always remember that too much of everything is bad. so we should still have to balance our diet to maintain a healthy living.

meanwhile, ms. laguda was right! we should not blame calories for making us fat, but instead, we should look on the other side of it. calories is really essential in our day-to-day living. without it, our body can't perform its vital functions which probably leads us to DEATH! so if ever you're fat or obese, its just a matter of balancing your diet and exercise in order to lose weight if you're planning to do so. :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. @ camille ocon: even i, was surprised to see that dark chocolates are good for us but in minimal amount. YES! too much of everything is bad. so BALANCE BALANCE BALANCE :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. you're right ms. ocon and ms. daguman! all we have to do is to balance and discipline ourselves about the food that we eat. upon learning how calories play an important role in our body, it only explains that the main cause of obesity isn't our calorie intake, it's all about how we handle and control ourselves in eating such foods listed by ms. daguman. so i'm into "TAKE IN CALORIES RESPONSIBLY!" campaign too. :))

    ReplyDelete
  50. HAHAH! Ms. Laguda, you're partly right of what you said that those misconceptions are media's fault.
It came to me that calories and fats are no good in our system. Now, I'm pretty well-oriented because of my field and Yo MAma's informative articles.

To all of us, i think we're aware of how much calories we take, not by specific amount of it but by TOO LOW, ENOUGH, and TOO MUCH SCALING.
(Better read Ms. Daguman's comment so you'll have a hint of High-Calorie containing foods).

And if we think we've taken in too much, never sit until you've used it.

    :))

    ReplyDelete
  51. ms. daguman: yeah right! BALANCE is really important especially when it comes in maintaining our body's state of health.

so i too is in favor of "TO TAKE IN CALORIES RESPONSIBLY!" campaign. you guys wanna join? let's all support this campaign! promote life through this act! haha :D

    ReplyDelete
  52. "you know, we shouldn't blame calories as the 'fattening' culprit, rather, we should look into our respective diet and eating habits before we second-guess."

nice point ms laguda, i say we shouldn't think of the calories as the salarin or culprit in being fat since they're only doing their job and what they are made for. they allow body movements which is essential in our body movements, and i support your statement that we'd die right now if we don't have calories.

so, for the people who keep counting their calorie intake, might as well have a healthy food intake than just merely counting the calories present in the foods and exercise more if you really don't wanna get fat... ^^

    ReplyDelete
  53. By the way Ms. Daguman, can we just have MILK CHOCOLATE instead of dark chocolate? They're bitter and have lots of caffeine too. The scenario would go like this, if there are lots of caffeine, sleep would be deprived, then would lead to obesity. (I remembered!) haha.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Whereas, milk chocolate have better compositions :D

I SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN! hahha. GO ENOUGH CALORIES!

    ReplyDelete
  55. As Ms. Laguda has said, many of us have misconceptions about calories. Calories are needed by our bodies in order to function. As Ms. Traces has said, it is the lack of exercise that causes us to become fat and not the food. This article stresses out the importance of calories in our bodies. I also think it emphasizes the importance of monitoring our calorie intake. But monitoring your calorie intake without any exercise would be pointless. So we should always maintain a balanced diet. I support the "TO TAKE IN CALORIES RESPONSIBLY!" campaign :D

    @Nover Arizobal

why not use a jump rope? it's more convenient to find xD and i think the best way to lose calories is by not counting it. so so let's save our brain from some math, shall we? instead, let's move our bodies ;>

    @Liz Carnicer

Don't worry, I sympathize with you. It seems that most food we crave for has high calories and it only means one thing, Limit what you eat.Not exactly depriving yourself from it but taking it in moderation.

  60. Thanks Yo'MAMA.

this article provided the thing I need to know which is the importance of calories in our body.

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Ms.Salera: i agree with you! articles like this can really provide us facts that in a way help us.. thanks to yo'mama! you have really good articles..

@Ms.arestang: don't worry! i wont..hehe..especially now knowing that calories plays a vital role in our body

There are really a lot of misconceptions about calories..for other people, they think that calories gives nothing to us but bad effects..and honestly, before i also believed that i cant get any good thing about calories.. but now after i read the article..i realized that calories are also important in our body.. But we must remember that we also need to burn the excess calories in the body...and if ever you want to lose weight, you must consume FEWER calories than you burn..
our body needs to burn calories in order to maintain balance. the primary role of calories in our body is in a way provide sources of energy to our body..so , its really important to have balanced calorie level .. you can attain this if you will eat the right kind of food and have physical activities ..through having the right amount of calories in the body, you will have the right amount of energy for high level of functioning.. :)
